The Australian Open is already over for Iga Swiatek.
Iga Swiatek, the women’s world number one, lost to Jelena Rybakina in straight sets in the round of 16 of the Australian Open. The Pole lost to the Kazakh 4:6, 4:6. Only for the seventh time in the Open era (for 55 years) did the world number one at the Australian Open not make it to the quarterfinals.
The smaller surprise with Polish participation was the five-set defeat (6: 3, 3: 6, 2: 6, 6: 1, 6: 7) of number ten seeded Hubert Hurkacz in the round of 16 against the American Sebastian Korda (ATP 31) . 22-year-old Korda started the game as a favorite based on results over the past three weeks. Korda has already defeated Jannik Sinner, Andy Murray, Roberto Bautista Agut and Daniil Medvedev in preparation for the Grand Slam tournament. (SDA/mab)
