… on the results of the World Cup:
“We had a big, ambitious goal that we missed,” says Tami. The disappointment was very great, but that’s not why everything was bad. “We played the best group stage since 2006 with six points. But once again we weren’t at the level of the round of 16 in a round of 16. He took it easy that some players commented critically on the tactics after the game. This had been agreed with the leading players. Yakin declined to explain in detail who was involved. Nor whether he had changed tactics due to Silvan Widmer’s absence. But he emphasized again: “It wasn’t a question of the system.”

The composition of the squad had already raised eyebrows before the World Cup. With Widmer and Ricardo Rodriguez, there were only two nominal full-backs in the squad. The lack of an alternative for the ailing Widmer brought Yakin a lot of criticism. The national coach denied that he left Jordan Lotomba and Kevin Mbabu at home for disciplinary reasons. In June in Geneva against Portugal, he put the two in the stands because they had played too long public cards in the hotel lobby the night before. But this was a one-off measure. Yakin doesn’t think losing to Portugal will affect the relationship between him and the side. There is no debate about Yakin’s position. Tami gave him a job guarantee after the game against Portugal. With regard to qualifying for the European Championship, Yakin is not planning any change, even if most of his players are over 30. “When I see how Pepe is still playing at the age of 39, I am convinced that we will enjoy our players for a long time to come.” According to Tami, there are no signs that a player will retire. Xherdan Shaqiri is also said to continue to play a role despite being involved in MLS. “He was very important. You didn’t notice that he hardly played a game before the tournament,” said Yakin.
