Silvano Gini (left) reports from the hospital with a thumbs up.
Shortly before Christmas, the European Cup is making a guest appearance in St. Moritz. A home race is always something special, also for the Swiss speed drivers.
But there is no reason for them to be happy in the first race. They all miss the podium in Tuesday’s downhill. Alexis Monney (22) is sixth as the best local.
But this result is secondary. Because Silvano Gini provides a Swiss moment of shock. The 20-year-old C squad rider is lifted off a wave and falls horribly. He slams onto the slope and ends up in the safety nets.
“I will be back soon”
Two days later, Graubünden posted a video of his fall on Instagram. And uses this at the same time to give the all-clear. “Not the Christmas present I was hoping for …” writes Gini. And adds: “I’m glad to have only a few bruises and a concussion.” In view of the pictures of his fall, he really got off lightly.
A photo that he published next to the video shows that he is doing well given the circumstances. It shows him in the hospital bed with a thumbs up. With him in the photo is teammate Thomas Zippert (19). He also left on Tuesday and probably visited Gini in the hospital.
“I’ll be back soon,” Gini also promises. Despite the unsuccessful European Cup premiere in the downhill, he will probably continue to compete in the supreme discipline. In total, he has contested seven races in the European Cup so far. In addition to one downhill, four giant slaloms and two Super-Gs. His best result: 27th place in the giant slalom.
Swiss podium in the second descent
While Gini is recovering from his fall, Zippert and the other Swiss ski a second descent in St. Moritz on Thursday. Zippert has to settle for 67th place, his compatriots are doing much better.
Gilles Roulin (28) finished second on the podium behind winner Alexander Cameron (Ka). Lars Rösti (24) in seventh and Marco Kohler (25) and Alexis Monney in shared 9th place round off the strong Swiss result. (bir)
