With second place on the difficult slalom slope in Schladming, Ramon Zenhäusler is back on the podium.
Suddenly the double meter felt like a small number. “I was devastated at the end of last season,” admits Ramon Zenhauser. In fact, everything suddenly seemed to be conspiring against the 2018 Olympic vice champion. After a shoulder injury sustained in a training fall, the Valaisian was also completely bogged down in the material area. That’s why the man with four World Cup victories was suddenly only 25th in the start list.
And experts like the German Frank Wörndl (63, slalom world champion 1987) wanted to write off Zenhäuser. “The slalom is constantly evolving. And I don’t have the feeling that Ramon can develop again,” Wörndl told Blick eleven months ago.
But now the 2.02 meter giant has proved all his critics to lie at the night slalom in Schladming. After finishing fifth in the first round, the 30-year-old really let it rip in the finale and finished the race in second place. Ramon is only seven hundredths short of the best time set by France’s Olympic champion Clément Noël. “But after the horrible last season, second place feels like a win for me. Especially since I achieved this result on a slope on which I didn’t really get going even in my best time.”
The fact that Zenhäusler is back is also due to the service man, whom he took over from Henrik Kristoffersen last spring. His name: Philippe “Youle” Petitjean. «Youle has been working for Rossignol for 30 years and therefore knows every screw in this company. That’s a huge advantage for me!”
Immediately after Zenhauser’s mega comeback, Wörndl contacted Blick. «Ramon really slapped me off with his performance as an expert. But I’m happy to accept that.”
A night giant slalom is on the agenda in Schladming today. After a test drive in the morning, the man from Nidwalden will decide whether Olympic champion and overall World Cup leader Marco Odermatt will start from Kitzbühel after his meniscus bruise.
