Kloten’s coach Jeff Tomlinson didn’t always understand the decisions of the referees in the two derby defeats against the ZSC Lions.
The uncertainty was huge. “I don’t understand the rule anymore. I really don’t understand it,” said Kloten coach Jeff Tomlinson after the first of two derby defeats this week.
The Canadian took his coaches challenge on Wednesday evening after the 1-0 win because ZSC striker Denis Hollenstein was at least with his upper body in goalkeeper Sandro Zurkirchen’s goal area when Simon Bodenmann scored.
The referees Thomas Urban (Austria) and Mikael Holm (Sd) still gave the goal after a long video studio. And a penalty for the unsuccessful challenge, which the Lions immediately used to make it 2-0. “You said that Nicholas Steiner prevented the Zurich player from getting out of the goal area,” explained Tomlinson.
He wasn’t the only one who didn’t understand the interpretation of the rules. There was also great uncertainty among the majority of the spectators and even among the ZSC players.
“The 1-0 shouldn’t have counted”
Now the National League has reacted on their social media channels and their homepage and published a small explanatory piece. Under the title: “ZSC Lions vs. EHC Kloten: The 1-0 shouldn’t have counted.”
The referee department is quoted as follows: “Since the ZSC player is not pressed, pushed or fouled in the goal area and he chooses the path himself, he is responsible for not getting into the goal area. Based on the video images, one can say that the upper body of the Zurich player is clearly in the 3D goal area in front of the goalkeeper’s head and thus impairs a view of the puck. »
In the end, the league draws the conclusion: “With the definition of the clubs decided in December 2021, there is a visual goalkeeper disability and the goal should have been canceled after the video review.”
For Kloten, this statement comes too late. But now the rule should not only be understandable for Tomlinson.
