Taiwan is again concerned about its security. The conflict with neighboring China threatens to escalate.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced that 39 aircraft entered Taiwan’s southeastern air defense zone on Thursday. The Taiwan government then launched 21 fighter jets and four H-6 bombers to warn the Chinese planes, writes the “Handelszeitung”.
Three Chinese naval vessels were also spotted near Taiwan, according to Taiwan’s report. The planes flew over the Bashi Canal to an area of the southeast coast of Taiwan, according to Taiwan.
In 1949, Taiwan and China split. Still, China is unwilling to recognize Taiwan’s independence. Xi Jinping wants to reunite the small island nation with the mainland. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen is pursuing other goals – she wants to get closer to the West. Again and again there is tension and provocation. (jwg)
