Mishap during flight preparation: A novice steward operated the emergency mechanism that triggered the rear evacuation slide.
January 13, 2023 will be remembered terribly by a British Airways flight attendant. It was to be his big day. For the first time he was allowed to be on board a machine as a steward. But the dream turned into a nightmare!
During the preparations for the start of flight BA75 from London to Lagos in Nigeria, the rear evacuation slide suddenly came loose, as “Areotelegraph” writes.
The newcomer had inadvertently activated the emergency mechanism. Although the technicians were on the spot immediately, the machine missed its assigned departure window. Finally, the plane took off four hours late – but without the flight attendant.
Baggage: the most common reason for delays
The error cost the airline the equivalent of almost 56,000 francs.
It is not known whether the flight attendant was able to celebrate its premiere in the meantime. “A broken slide, a detour, two nights in Lagos and a very tired crew,” tweeted a colleague afterwards.
The most common reason for a departure delay is the luggage of the travelers. They often enter the cabin fully laden. It takes (too) long until everything is properly stowed away. The case from Great Britain shows that the cabin crew can also cause delays. (abbot)
