Guinea-Bissau President announces new elections

Embalo pointed to persistent and irreconcilable differences with Parliament, which have exhausted trust between sovereign institutions. According to a presidential decree, parliamentary elections will take place on December 18th.

The former Portuguese colony in West Africa with a population of around two million is notoriously unstable. There have been four military coups since independence in 1974, most recently in 2012.
