The money is intended to finance the expansion of the military and the capping of energy and water prices, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday.

The war and the “Brussels sanctions policy” against Russia had led to a “price increase” which, together with the rising interest rates, “brought additional profits to the banks and multinational corporations,” said the Hungarian head of government as justification. The “details and figures” of this measure should be announced at a press conference on Thursday. In the video, Orban said the special tax should apply for this year and next.
