Amazon hostage-taking: In the Peruvian Amazon, tribal people have taken dozens of tourists hostage to protest government inaction after an oil spill from a pipeline. “We want to get the government’s attention with this action,” said Watson Trujillo, head of the northern municipality of Cuninico, the radio station RPP on Thursday (local time).

The 70 or so tourists being held captive on a tributary of the Marañon are Peruvians and foreigners, he added. According to the information, the foreign holidaymakers come from Switzerland, the USA, Spain, France, Great Britain and Switzerland. Among them are women and children.
