Arrested after protest
Iranian actress Alidoosti is free again
The Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti, known from «The Salesman», is back in freedom. After taking part in the nationwide protests, she ended up behind bars.
Taraneh Alidoosti starred in some well-known films.
The well-known Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti (38) has been released on bail after more than two weeks in prison from the notorious Ewin prison. This was reported by the reform-oriented Iranian newspaper “Shargh” on Wednesday.
Alidoosti was arrested in mid-December in connection with the nationwide protests in Iran. She had previously shown solidarity with the women’s movement and published a now-deleted picture on Instagram without the headscarf that is obligatory in Iran. After her arrest, the actress was accused of “spreading false information and supporting counter-revolutionary circles”.
Film ban in Iran
More than 600 artists and filmmakers recently issued an open letter demanding Alidoosti’s release. The Cannes Film Festival also condemned the detention and called for her immediate release.
The 38-year-old is one of Iran’s most successful actresses. Alidoosti’s best-known films include the dramas The Salesman and All About Elly, both directed by two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi. Last year she celebrated the premiere of her latest film “Leila’s Brothers” at the Cannes Film Festival. Public showings of the film in Iranian cinemas have been banned by the Ministry of Culture.
