Talks are only possible if Russia withdraws its soldiers, admits its mistake and maybe there is a new leadership in Moscow, Zelensky told the British broadcaster Sky News in an interview broadcast on Thursday. “Only then can the situation be resolved. Only then are negotiations possible.” The President had already banned negotiations with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin by decree at the end of September 2022.
Zelensky stressed that a meeting with Putin was pointless. ‘I don’t care. It’s not interesting to meet, it’s not interesting to talk,” he said. ‘They don’t want negotiations, and that was the case before the attack. President Putin made that decision.”
He is convinced that Ukraine is only the first step for Putin, Zelensky said. Before the war there were meetings with Putin. “I’ve seen a man say one thing and then do another,” Zelensky said. ‘Who is he now? After a full-scale invasion, he’s a nobody.”
Zelensky admitted that Ukrainian troops are under pressure in the Zaporizhia region in the south of the country and in the east. The Russian troops attacked regardless of casualties. “These are extraordinary numbers. They don’t care,” he said. “There are thousands dead on their side, but they just throw people in.”
