Mass murderer Mikhail Popkov wants to be released for the war.
Mikhail Popkov (58) is said to have committed between 80 and 200 murders in 20 years. Nobody knows exactly how many there are. The serial killer, who brutally killed dozens, if not hundreds, of women between 1992 and 2012, was convicted of 83 murders. Now he is behind bars for the rest of his life.
In a bizarre interview with Russian television, Popkov called for his release – for the war. The bloodthirsty serial killer wants to be sent to the Ukrainian front for President Vladimir Putin (70). In return, he demands his pardon.
In the interview, Popkov was asked what his biggest dream was. The mass murderer then replied: «I want to join the army. Without thinking.”
dozens of victims
Popkov served in the Soviet Army as a radio operator. In view of the war, this job was “in great demand” again, according to the murderer, nicknamed the “Siberian werewolf”. He was aware that he had to bring his technical knowledge into shape. “I’ve been in prison for ten years now. But I’m a fast learner and could refresh my knowledge again.”
The “Siberian werewolf” killed in a row between 1992 and 2012. His victims were all women who, in his view, did “immoral things”. Disguised as a police officer, he lured his victims into his car and brutally killed them. He used screwdrivers, knives and axes, among other things, for his murders. He then abused the previously maltreated bodies.
Prisoners as cannon fodder
It is unclear whether the mass murderer will actually be released. However, in recent weeks, murderers and rapists have repeatedly been taken out of Russian prisons to fight on the Ukrainian front. Up to 40,000 prisoners are to be given impunity in exchange for a six-month deployment at the front.
Many serve in the infamous Wagner Group, among others. This sends convicted criminals into the war against Ukraine. Even Putin himself seems to legitimize the controversial practice – and even create an incentive for it.
But the prisoners are not trained as real soldiers. Instead, they are mainly used as cannon fodder. According to a new report, only a fraction of the prisoners recruited for military service by the Wagner group survive. Most pay for the longing for freedom with their lives.
