A brutal machete attack shakes Spain. The violent crime took place in Algeciras, southern Spain.
At around 8 p.m., the attacker stormed the San Isidro chapel in Cadiz and started an argument with a priest. He then stabs the usher with a machete and leaves him badly injured.
The attack does not appear to have quenched the man’s thirst for blood. He makes his way to the nearest church. He chooses the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma in Algeciras, driving an extra 100 kilometers for it. In front of the church he meets an acolyte, without hesitation the Moroccan attacks the sacristan.
The usher does not survive the machete attack. The news agency Europa Press reports on Wednesday evening, citing the police.
In addition to the sacristan, the perpetrator also injured a priest and three other people, the state television station RTVE reported.
Was it a terrorist attack?
The police arrested a suspect. The man has no papers, but is apparently of Moroccan origin. The motive for the crimes was initially unclear.
The pastor of the Church of La Palma, Juan José Marina, who was outside the church at the time, said “El Pais”: “According to what I was told, a Muslim came in and started throwing things from the altar .»
A terrorist background is not ruled out by the police, RTVE reported. The public prosecutor suspects that the crime was a terrorist attack, several Spanish media reported.
The Interior Ministry said the matter was being investigated. The nature of the attack cannot be determined at this time. (SDA)
