Elisangela T. was with her two children on this beach in São Paulo when several rockets and firecrackers were ignited on New Year’s Eve.
It should be a beautiful evening, an unforgettable moment to celebrate the new year. Elisangela T.* (38†) came to the Praia Grande beach near São Paulo with her two children to admire the fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
But the evening ended tragically. Around midnight numerous firecrackers and rockets were ignited. A firecracker strayed and caught on T.’s clothing and exploded.
“I saw a huge flash of lightning just as it was midnight. Then I heard screams, »says an eyewitness to the Brazilian news portal «G1». Then she saw a bleeding woman lying in the sand. Rescue workers were called immediately. But they couldn’t have done anything more for T., her injuries were too serious.
“My God, I can’t believe it”
How the tragic accident could have happened is now being determined. The police are investigating the case with regard to involuntary manslaughter. What is clear so far: The fireworks did not come from the Brazilian and her children, but were ignited in the area – illegally.
T.’s family and friends are in shock. “My God, I can’t believe it,” says a friend of “G1”. T. was buried on Monday. (lrc)
