“Sneaks in unnoticed”
New corona variant can infect you every month
Health experts around the world are alarmed. Because: It is assumed that the new corona variant BA.5 can infect people again within a few weeks after infection.
The coronavirus is still mutating.
The corona virus has mutated several times. And the new variants seem to be becoming more and more contagious. Researchers believe that the “secret” BA.5 variant can even infect people several times in a very short time.
“We are finding that more and more people have been infected with BA.2 and are being infected again after four weeks,” Andrew Robertson, Australia’s chief health official, told News.co.au. “Then after six to eight weeks they develop a second infection, and that’s almost certainly BA.4 or BA.5.”
High number of unreported cases
The “Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention” assumes that the variant BA.5 is responsible for 88.8 percent of the new corona cases in the USA. According to “The Independent”, however, experts assume that the number of BA.5 cases is likely to be much higher due to the lack of reports.
According to a study by immunology professor Danny Altmann, the two subvariants BA.2 and BA.5 are largely immune to protection from vaccines and previous infections. This is one of the reasons why an unusually large number of people are infected multiple times.
Vaccination remains the most effective
According to Altmann, “most people – even if they were triple vaccinated – would have a 20-fold lower neutralizing antibody response against Omicron than against the original ‘Wuhan’ strain”. It is “a kind of stealth virus that creeps in unnoticed”.
Despite everything, experts still refer to vaccination as the most effective remedy against corona. The vaccines offer at least partial immunity and protect against potentially serious illnesses. A new wave and a comeback of the masks cannot be ruled out despite the currently low numbers in Switzerland. (obf)
