The politician from the right-wing liberal party Venstre has been accused of exceeding the limits of freedom of expression under Danish criminal law paragraph 109. However, a majority in the Danish parliament on Thursday voted not to lift the MP’s immunity without knowing what he would be charged with.

Denmark’s current defense minister, Mattias Tesfaye, previously declined to reveal any information about the case. According to Danish media, Hjort came under suspicion in connection with the cooperation between Denmark and the US secret service NSA. The politician, who was Defense Minister from 2016 to 2019, has confirmed this cooperation several times.
