The Foch, pictured here on the right, in 1994. At that time still part of the French Navy. The ship is now loaded with toxic waste and is sailing the world’s oceans.

The aircraft carrier Foch used to be a flagship of the French Navy. The 266 meter long ship now sails under the Brazilian flag and bears the name São Paulo. A Turkish shipyard has bought the decommissioned naval ship, but cannot find a port where the ship, which is loaded with various toxic waste, is allowed to anchor. Environmentalists now fear that Brazil will dump the São Paulo in the sea outside its territorial waters.

Last week, Friday, the Brazilian Navy announced that it had towed the São Paulo in the Atlantic. The ship, laden with asbestos, paint and other toxic waste, is now about 315 kilometers off the Brazilian coast.
