Pavel Antow († 65) earned millions as an entrepreneur, was considered the top earner among Russian MPs and was a member of Putin’s United Russia party. Now, criticism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine could have been his downfall.
He wanted to celebrate his 66th birthday in India. Now the meat manufacturer is dead. The news channel NDTV reports that Antow was found lifeless in front of the hotel in the Rayagada district in the Indian state of Odisha.
The politician apparently fell from a hotel window on the third floor. This was announced by the Russian consulate in Calcutta. There is no evidence of a crime. Indian media had previously reported that Antow had jumped off the roof of the house.
Pavel Antov’s companion suffered a heart attack
In the summer, Antow had criticized violence against civilians in view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “A girl was pulled out from under the rubble, the girl’s father appears to have died. Honestly, it’s difficult to call this anything other than terrorism,” Antow is said to have said in June, according to the Daily Mail.
Under intense public pressure, he later apologized for the statement, reiterating that he had “always supported the President” and “sincerely” supported the goals of Putin’s military operation.
The Russian became rich with his meat company. He made millions by selling sausages and schnitzels. Until his death, he was considered one of the richest MPs in the country.
Antow was traveling in India with a group of four. A few days before the mysterious defenestration, Vladimir Bydanov, one of Antow’s companions, was found dead. Bydanow is said to have suffered a heart attack on Thursday.
