The airport was initially out of service due to the attack, the Sana news agency reported.
According to this, the attack took place around 02:00 local time (00:00 CET). “The Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike with a barrage of rockets that hit Damascus International Airport and its surroundings,” Sana said. Two Syrian soldiers were killed and two others injured.
Since the war in Syria began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in the neighboring country. The attacks target positions of the Syrian army, pro-Iranian forces and the Islamist Hezbollah, which is allied with Iran.
Rarely does Israel comment specifically on the attacks. However, Israel has repeatedly emphasized that it will not allow Iran to extend its influence to Israel’s borders.
