Several people have died in a fire at a Cambodian casino hotel on the border with Thailand. In a preliminary police report, which was available to the AFP news agency, there was talk of “about” ten dead and 30 injured. The fire at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino in Poipet broke out on Thursday night.
The blaze raged for nine hours before firefighters brought it under control. Video footage circulating online showed the hotel on fire and several people apparently jumping out of the burning building. According to media reports, foreign nationals were also in the casino at the time of the fire.
According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, several injured people were taken to hospitals in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. A volunteer with Thai rescue organization Ruamkatanyu Foundation said the fire started on the first floor of the building and then spread quickly. (SDA/kes)
