The Swiss hacker Maia Arson Crimew has been targeted by the US authorities.
The Swiss hacker Maia Arson Crimew * (23) is again targeted by the US authorities. On Friday, the Lucerne native gained access to the US no-fly list, which discloses the names of around 1.5 million terrorist suspects. It did so via an unsecured US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) server.
Your data leak makes waves in the USA. Once again, the American authorities want to open an investigation against Arson. But what does she have to say about this – and about her discovery? “20 minutes,” she says, the find is not a surprise for her. “I know how insecure these systems are. At the same time, such a find is very shocking,” says the “hacktivist” to the newspaper. Mainly because the list contains not only names but also dates of birth.
Lucerne resident regrets going public
And: “I’m amazed at how much attention I’ve caused now.” Since Arson leaked the list of journalists from the US tech magazine “Daily Dot”, she could hardly save herself from media inquiries, as the report goes on to say.
Today she would no longer decide to go public. “To appear with my face and my real name was actually a stupid idea,” continues Arson. Nonetheless, it gives her the opportunity to speak to the media and explain her actions. Because: “I stand behind what I do.” The fact that she is now being targeted by the CIA is “a bit scary”. But paranoia doesn’t get her anywhere and she tries not to think about it.
«I want to create a hack that will destroy capitalism»
The knowledge that such a security gap has been found triggers “a certain euphoria and a lot of adrenaline”. “Such a list of people, which a government considers ‘bad’, of course has a huge potential for abuse in many hands,” said Arson on “20 minutes”.
With her “hacktivism” she is basically pursuing anarchy. “I would be happy if I could create a hack that destroys capitalism.” But she is well aware of the dimensions of this ambitious goal: “But I will not achieve my ultimate goal of anarchism alone.”
The Lucerne native was accused of several hacks by a US court in March 2021. The allegations included computer fraud and abuse, electronic crime and identity theft. The current incident also puts Arson in distress. As Martin Steiger, a specialist in data protection law and IT law, said to Blick, Arson could no longer leave Switzerland so quickly. Otherwise, she would face several years in prison. (dzc)
