Fierce fighting is raging in eastern Ukraine: in order to stop the Russian advance, the Ukrainian armed forces have blown up several bridges on the Siwerskyi Donets river. Therefore, in order to overcome the natural obstacle, the Russians tried pontoon bridges near the village of Bilohorivka.
According to CNN, at least three of them have now been destroyed. The Russians are said to have suffered heavy losses – satellite images show the destroyed bridges and burned-out tanks and other military vehicles. Hundreds of soldiers are said to have been killed.

While the Russians continue to advance and encircle the Ukrainians, the Ukrainians are trying to repel the advance and cut off the Russian supply lines. The river is becoming the decisive dividing line and is currently preventing both sides from making progress.
nightmare for military attack
At the end of March, Vladimir Putin (69) decided to change strategy. He shifted the focus of the offensive to the Donbass in the east of the country. Now it turns out, however, that the terrain in particular makes it difficult for him to advance.
One reason for this is the Siwerskyj Donez, a tributary of the Don that is more than 1000 kilometers long. It rises in Russia and flows into Ukraine. Its course is serpentine. On the way, he always forms swamps and flood plains – a nightmare for a military attack.
Identical to Frontline
It is precisely on this river that the two forces now collide. While the Ukrainians have been able to fend off most of the attacks so far, the Russians managed to break through to the other side of the river at one point on Thursday. If they can hold their own there and secure supplies across the river, that would be a great success for Putin.
But as the “NZZ” reports, the Ukrainian army has already built strong defense lines behind the natural obstacle. No wonder that the river is now identical to the front line for longer stretches. (bra)
