US authorities warn of “Sleepy Chicken” challenge
Tiktok users cook chicken in cough syrup
There’s another nonsensical trend on Tiktok: the Sleepy Chicken Challenge. Chicken is cooked in cough syrup. Now even the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning of the internet phenomenon.
The “Sleepy Chicken” trend is currently circulating on Tiktok.
Some dangerous challenges were already circulating on Tiktok. The current one is a recipe that not only spoils your appetite – but can also be dangerous for your health. The video, which is going viral, shows chicken breasts being doused in a green liquid and fried in a pan.
The liquid is said to be the NyQuil cough syrup, which is very popular in the US and is also said to help you fall asleep. Appropriately, the makers called the video “Sleepy Chicken”.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned, as reported by various US media. “It sounds stupid and unsavory and can even be very dangerous,” say the experts. Because: The properties of the cough syrup can change when you cook it. Inhaling the fumes could also damage the lungs.
Not the first dangerous challenge
The original video was posted by the user “systemofaclown69”. The profile is now set to private and the video is no longer visible on Tiktok. Fortunately, the “Sleepy Chicken” challenge has not spread widely, most users react rather disgusted to the recipe and advise others against it in the comments.
Warnings come not only from the FDA, but Tiktok also provides the videos of this challenge with the warning: “Participating in this activity could cause you to hurt yourself or others to hurt themselves.” The warnings are played out so prominently because it is not the first dangerous trend on the platform.
In 2020, for example, there was the “Benadryl Challenge”, in which too high a dose of a drug should also be taken. A 15-year-old died at the time because of the challenge. (lrc)
