Rescuers are still searching for survivors under the rubble. But hope is fading by the hour. After Saturday’s devastating rocket attack, there is a huge gap in the apartment building in the city of Dnipro in central eastern Ukraine.
By Monday evening, 40 bodies had been recovered, and the search for 25 people who were initially missing should continue on Tuesday. The attack also injured 77 people. One family is among the survivors. Kateryna Selenska (27), her husband and their son Nikita (1) were found under the rubble, as the news portal “Ukrainska Pravda” reports.
In one photo you can see how a firefighter carries the frightened Kateryna Selenska out of the destroyed house. She had to endure under the rubble for 20 hours. “This is my sister! She was only found this morning and thank God she’s alive, »writes Selenska’s sister on this recording yesterday. She and her family were living in “that cursed house” when the Russian missile hit.
Her body temperature was only 31 degrees
The young woman did not call for help because she was deaf. Despite this, the rescue workers managed to find the mother. But before that, a lot of debris had to be cleared away. It took ten hours before Selenska could be freed. Her husband and son were also pulled out of the rubble shortly afterwards.
They had hypothermia and were taken to the hospital, her sister continues. Kateryna Selenska’s body temperature is said to have been only 31 degrees. If the body temperature of a person falls below 35 degrees, one speaks of hypothermia, which can be life-threatening. For example, if the temperature is too low, the organs can no longer work properly or even fail.
Retaliation for missile attack on home
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (44) has denounced the deadly attack on the apartment building in Dnipro as a “war crime”. “Every person responsible for this war crime will be identified and brought to justice,” said the head of state in his daily video address on Tuesday night. Kyiv blames Russia for the attack – Moscow denies this.
According to the UN, it was one of the deadliest attacks in Ukraine since the Russian invasion. UN Secretary-General António Guterres (73) condemned the attack and spoke of “another example of an alleged violation of martial law”. (jmh/AFP)
