Huge forest fires are currently raging in the Russian region of Siberia. Around 270,000 hectares are on fire – an area about the size of the canton of Ticino. The fires are so powerful that the plumes of smoke can even be seen in space. The flames have already engulfed several towns and at least 16 people have died so far.

While wildfires are not uncommon in Siberia, rising temperatures and lack of rainfall are making them more frequent and more destructive. And: As the “Spiegel” reports, this year the firefighters could also be missing because of the war in Ukraine.
