A full vaccination is and remains the best prevention for pregnant women against corona complications.
According to a large-scale international study, a corona infection with the omicron variant during pregnancy increases the risk of death in expectant mothers – especially in unvaccinated women. The risks were lower in vaccinated women.
A corona vaccination effectively protects pregnant women from complications, wrote the Geneva University Hospital involved in the study in a statement on Wednesday. A total of 41 hospitals in 18 countries were involved in the study, which was published in the journal The Lancet.
Full vaccination is the best prevention
The scientists examined data from 1545 pregnant women infected with the omicron variant. This data was compared with the dossiers of 3073 pregnant women without corona. In particular, the risk of pre-eclampsia — an increase in blood pressure that causes kidney damage — was higher in women with severe symptoms.
Vaccinated women, on the other hand, had a low risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit. According to the study, full vaccination proved to be the best form of prevention.
